Unicode
I’ve done a little experiment in Unicode, a format for encoding special Czech characters for web pages. The test is this text-based contents page. I’d appreciate feedback on it. Does it work for you? If not, what kind of computer do you have? What kind and what version of browser?
Pickled Herring
From A Natural History of the @ Sign:
“Czech (Czech Republic)
In Czech, @ is called zavinac (pronounced ZAHV-in-ach), meaning ‘rollmops,’ or pickled herring. Perhaps the shape suggests herring packed tightly in a jar!”
That must be zavináč (darn diacritics).
Slunce, Dum, Kniha
Pero, Sesit, Ucebnice
Corrections
A few corrections, courtesy a generous reader: Darek now has the proper diacritic over the A; Zert has been properly alphabetized in the index; and Pasta has been corrected to read, more specifically, Zubni Pasta. Thanks Daniel!
If you see any other mistakes, please let me know!
