I ran across a fascinating site today, Xerox Research Centre Europe: Multi Language Theory & Technology Demos: Czech Analyzer. It’s not a translation tool, but a linguistic analyzation tool–a sort of tool for do-it-yourselfers. Plug in a Czech phrase, and it will break it down by part of speech, gender, case, etc. This makes it easy for someone with only a dictionary in hand to puzzle out Czech text. Very clever, those guys at Xerox! [found via VADA‘s language resources. There’s more good Czech links there too.]
Even more new nouns: Zidle, Chair, Holka, Girl, Slovnik, Dictionary, Posta, (easy one) Post office, Lampa, (even easier) Lamp, and Student, (easiest), Student. (links fixed now. sorry!)
I’ve done a little experiment in Unicode, a format for encoding special Czech characters for web pages. The test is this text-based contents page. I’d appreciate feedback on it. Does it work for you? If not, what kind of computer do you have? What kind and what version of browser?
From A Natural History of the @ Sign:
“Czech (Czech Republic)
In Czech, @ is called zavinac (pronounced ZAHV-in-ach), meaning ‘rollmops,’ or pickled herring. Perhaps the shape suggests herring packed tightly in a jar!”
That must be zavináč (darn diacritics).
More new nouns: Slunce, Sun, Dum, House, and Kniha, Book.
Three new entries, in honor of some news I heard yesterday. A visitor told me she found my site via a Frommer’s book on Prague! I had no idea. I wonder, is it this one? I’ll check my local bookstore. The new nouns are Pero, Pen, Sesit, Notebook, and Ucebnice, Textbook.
A few corrections, courtesy a generous reader: Darek now has the proper diacritic over the A; Zert has been properly alphabetized in the index; and Pasta has been corrected to read, more specifically, Zubni Pasta. Thanks Daniel!
If you see any other mistakes, please let me know!
Three new adjectives for the brand-new adjective section: Bily, White, Moderni, Modern, and Velky, Big.
Hey, new front page!. Well, I wanted to be able to showcase the three sections, including the new one, Adjectives. I hope you like it.
A few things last night: Mleko, Milk, Napoj, Drink, and Vejce, Egg. And this morning, Obchodni Dum, Department Store, and Zelenina, Vegetables.
